Krasen Kale Fortress

The Krasen Kale Fortress is a military, administrative, economic and spiritual centre of the Panagyurishte region in late Antiquity and the Middle Ages (4-14 century AD). Krasen Kale Fortress is located 5 km southwards of Panagyurishte.

A highly precious and important find was discovered in the fortress during an archaeological research which happened in 1987 and that object was a medallion-stamp of the fortress's last ruler Rafail. The importance of that find is that this stamp is the only known object which is known to belong to a Bulgarian noble of that time.
The fortress is believed to date back to 10 century, and nowadays there are 6 meters of high preserved walls. The fortress is situated at the distance of about 3 km from Buta village, Pazardjik region, and at about 10 km to the south of Panagyurishte. If one wants to visit and see closely the Krasen Kale fortress one should walk from the village of Buta and when one reaches the foot of the peak where the fortress is constructed, only 15 minutes are needed to arrive to the fortress. There are many extant parts of the fortress including buildings, fortress walls and very good extant waterkeeper (shterna). The fortress has beautifully shaped inner and outer fortress walls.
Tourists often visit this area and enjoy the magnificence of the Krasen Kale Fortress. The authenticity of the ancient times since when the fortress dates back is still preserved.
