Pirin Mountain

Pirin mountain is the second highest mountain in Bulgaria after the Rila mountain. It is situated in the southwest part of the country in a rather extended shape to the northwest and southeast between the rivers Struma and Mesta. Pirin mountain offers some of the finest walking trace in Europe and has acquired an Alpine relief - rocky marble or granite peaks and cliffs, deep cirques, well shaped glacier valleys and lakes.
The Pirin Mountain offers places where one can find most of the region's ski resorts and hiking centers, as well as 12 chalets and 4 huts which are open for mountaineers in the winter. Because of its unique nature, in 1983 UNESCO decided to include the Pirin National Park in the list of the world's cultural and natural heritage.

Country's second highest peak Vihren (2,914 in), 176 mountain lakes and about 100 varieties of rare plants, including the edelweiss and the famous Baikousheva Vir, almost 1,300 years old. Location of the well-known climatic and spa resort of Sandanski and the latest Bulgarian ski center Bansko.
Situated in the highest reaches of the Pirin Mountain, Pirin National Park comprises of alpine peaks that rise above 8,202ft (2,500m) and more than a hundred glacial lakes scattered at their feet. The majestic landscape consists of old forests, waterfalls, caves and areas of limestone that are home to the near extinct edelweiss and the Pirin poppy. Characteristic to the park is the quite rare number of endemic species of plants and animals, and the unique environment is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural and National Heritage site. Alpine mountaineering and skiing are some of the entertaining activities for visitors which the mountain landscape offers, alongside the hiking tourism which is steadily growing in popularity.
