Vitosha Mountain

Vitosha Mountain is the most visited mountain in Bulgaria. It rises right above Sofia and is one of the main symbols of the Bulgarian capital. With its highest peak - Cherni Vrah (2290 m.) it is considered the fourth mountain in Bulgaria among the others in the country by a bunch of criteria one of which is the amount of visits a year by tourists.
Vitosha is the first of all the Bulgarian mountains where hiking tourism in Bulgaria began and developed successfully. The date 27 August 1895 is thought of as the beginning of the hiking tourism.
Zlatnite Mostove (Golden Bridges) is one of the most popular tourist places on Vitosha Mountain, located at an altitude of 1400 m above sea level in the Vladaya sub-part of the Northern Range of Vitosha. What is most notorious here is one highly curious phenomenon - the moreni, which forms a sort of a stone river.

The Vitosha Mountain is situated in the center of southwestern Bulgaria between the Balkan Range and the Rila-Rhodope massive. This dome-like mountain in Bulgaria consists of the highest and closest to each other peaks - Cherni vrah and Rezniovete. The stone rivers are a typical natural formation on the mountain.
The Vitosha mountain is perfect for hiking - skiing in the winter and trekking in the summer. It is easily accessible both in the winter and in the summer but the weather conditions are sometimes severe.
Aleko ski resort is the main one and it offers beautiful scenery in this area during the whole year, making it popular with hikers as well as skiers.
